Single-use plastics are everywhere!

They litter our beaches, parks and streets, clog our drainage systems and pollute our waterways. Did you know that in the United States each day we use 70 million plastic water bottles and 500 million plastic straws?

It is this incessant waste stream that angered Diane Buhler and prompted her to start a nonprofit. Friends of Palm Beach is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to regularly clean the beaches of Palm Beach by removing plastics, trash and debris, as well as to educate the community. They host monthly volunteer cleanup events and send out smaller crews on weekdays. Learn more here.

Prompted by a Facebook comment suggesting we hold a volunteer cleanup event in Lake Worth because “the litter is out of control," we decided to team up with Friends of Palm Beach, the Lake Worth Waterkeeper and other locals to do just that. So, on Feb. 18, Palm Beach County Mayor Weiss, Lake Worth Beach elected officials and volunteers will be going to the Bryant Park area in Lake Worth Beach to pick up trash.
