Adventure Awaits Right Here in Palm Beach County

Body

by County Vice Mayor Hal Valeche

We in Palm Beach County live in a unique environment which includes more than 31,000 acres of natural areas and greenways owned or leased and managed by the county.  These lands were acquired with funds received through the sale of voter-approved bonds in the 1990s matched with state and local dollars.  The lands purchased were selected on the basis of their biological characteristics and were bought to preserve the rare and diverse native ecosystems present on the sites and the endangered, threatened, and rare species of plants and animals that live there.  These natural areas also provide numerous opportunities for the public to enjoy the outdoors.

Personally, one of my favorite forms of recreation and transportation is bicycling.  Cycling is also a great way to see and appreciate our county’s beautiful natural areas.  But whether you cycle, walk, hike, kayak, or ride a horse, I hope that you will explore these preserved lands and take advantage of some of the programs offered there, all free of charge.

For the third year in a row during the months of September through November, Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is presenting the event series, “Adventure Awaits.”  The series invites the public to experience our natural areas with 15 events and a family-friendly festival.  Events include opportunities to interact with ERM naturalists as they lead cycling and paddling tours, a swamp tromp, teach nature photography skills, and observe some of our fascinating species including South Florida butterflies.

A popular event that is returning this season is stargazing where participants view planets, stars, and solar systems in a serene natural setting.  Additionally, the “Growing Up Wild” events are designed to inspire children and their parents to connect with nature.

Feedback from the community on the Adventure Awaits events has been very positive, and parents have expressed their appreciation for having these magnificent ecosystems and species revealed to their families.  So if you’re looking for an opportunity to take a break from the television and technology devices and get up close and personal with nature, check out Adventure Awaits.

Space is limited and advance registration is required for all events.  The adventures vary in level of experience from “beginner” to more “advanced” and a complete schedule for Adventure Awaits can be found at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/PBCERM/events.  To make a reservation, please visitwww.pbcerm.eventbrite.com.

In addition, your neighborhood can organize a tour of nearby natural areas, guided by ERM nature experts.  If you are interested, please let us know or you can contact them directly at (561) 233-2400.

As always, if there is any way that I or my staff can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact me at (561) 355-2201 or by email at hvaleche@pbcgov.org.
