Commissioner Marino joined fellow commissioners, local government leaders, public water utilities, private entities, regional agencies, State of Florida officials, and citizen stakeholders to kick off construction of the first phase of the C-51 Reservoir.  Named after its primary water source, the C-51 canal, the reservoir project will provide an alternate water supply source for eight public water utilities in South Florida.

When complete, the C-51 Reservoir will store excess wet-season stormwater for later distribution and use during the dry season to recharge the surficial and Biscayne Aquifers throughout the region, the primary source of drinking water for the South Florida region.  Future phases could add additional storage over time, which could be used to combat saltwater intrusion and assist with the restoration of the Lake Worth Lagoon and Loxahatchee River, as well as for additional alternative water supply needs and environmental purposes. The phased, two-reservoir project will cover 60,000 acre feet on property owned by Palm Beach Aggregates, LLC on Southern Boulevard near 20-Mile Bend.
