On January 15, 2021, Commissioner Marino helped recognize seven hometown heroes who rescued a family whose plane skidded off the runway into the adjacent swamp during takeoff at the North County Airport. Six civilians and one family member received the 2020 Civilian Heroism Awards from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in recognition of their selfless and brave actions to save others. Honored citizens included Chris Fernandez and Josh Vega Cortez of Signature Flight Support, Sean Nowlan and Timmy Palmer of AMS, Dan Buck and Steve Kramer of Luhtech Facility Maintenance, and family member Michael Prather.
