Estelle Karwell

It is through the hard work of our volunteers that we are able to educate the public about the many different animals, habitats, and environmental issues we face today. Their dedicated hard work helps to keep our animals happy and healthy. Visitors also play their part through their purchases at our gift shop. These funds help to buy the food and supplies for our animals.

It takes a special talent to manage this shop while keeping in mind our clientele and what they may be looking for in a nature center gift shop. That person has to be aware of the visitors and their needs as well as the staff and volunteers who work the shop. We can thank Estelle Karwell for bringing this talent to Okeeheelee.

Originally a New Jersey native, Estelle has been in Florida for about 25 years. In New Jersey, Estelle handled the account for United Artists and then it was retirement that brought her to Florida. That didn't last long however, and before long Estelle decided that it was time to get back into the market. She became the purchasing manager for Polo Ralph Lauren. When she left there she still needed somewhere to exercise her marketing skills. Okeeheelee Nature Center provided her with new people and a new challenge. One might think this was enough but, she also volunteered as a messenger for JFK Hospital and helped set up the gift shop at Green Cay Nature Center. We all have been called in for opinions and to act as a sounding board for Estelle whenever she feels that a change may be needed or a new product is offered. She is always quick to bring the team onboard and get their personal opinions.

What does she like to do with her free time? She likes to travel when she gets the chance. When asked what would be nice for the gift shop? It would be nice if it were bigger, she responds. We could all do with a little more positive energy like that.
